For UMHC Nurses : Meet Our Nurses
| Working together, we can all make a lasting difference at UMHC |
"I've been a nurse at UMC for 36 years. I was shopping at the mall when a woman came up to me and said, 'Your name is Ivory. I could never forget your smiling face.' She told me that she could not have made it through labor without me. She then turned to the young man who was with her and said, 'This is the baby.' He's 21 now. As they hugged me, it made me realize why I went into nursing in the first place. I'm a nurse and UMHC is my choice." ![]() Jane Goff, RN Adult Hospital "As a nurse who works with adults, I’m accustomed to seeing patients who need more than just medical treatment. When Hurricane Katrina hit, we had a cancer patient who told me she had ridden out the storm under a gas station canopy. She lost everything, slept on the ground and became so sick she had to be airlifted to UMC. The nurses I work with quickly arranged for her a place to stay and clothes for her to wear. Her gratitude touched my heart. I’m a nurse and UMC is my choice."
"I had a patient who didn’t want surgery, but he couldn’t explain that to his doctor because he only spoke Spanish. I translated the patient’s desire for a different option to the doctor and that closed the communication gap. As nurses, we’re taught to be the patient’s advocate, liaison and educator. At UMC you have the freedom to do that. You have the doctors who stand by you and encourage you to be the patient’s voice. I’m a nurse and UMC is my choice."
I was so touched by his cheerful disposition and wondered why he was so happy. He told me that God had promised him a new body in the after life. His words made me look at my job and my life differently. It made me stop and appreciate the little things. As nurses, we like to change lives for the better, but sometimes patients change our lives. I’m a nurse and UMC is my choice." |
