Become a UMHC Nurse : Emergency Services
If you’re intrigued by the idea of a fast-paced, team-based atmosphere that provides virtually endless opportunities for learning, you’ll find it in our Emergency Services. This department offers an exhilarating environment where challenges and rewards come hand in hand, each and every day.
Our emergency services consist of a Pediatric Emergency Department, an Adult Emergency Department and AirCare, our air medical critical care transport service. Both our pediatric and adult facilities are part of Mississippi’s only Level I trauma center.
Our 13-bed pediatric emergency department is a comprehensive unit that provides care for patients aged 16 and under, and is equipped to care for any pediatric injury or illness. Currently more than 30,000 patients are seen here per year.
The adult facility is a 40-bed unit that provides acute emergency care to patients age 17 and up. It features eight beds with centralized monitoring (including three for trauma patients), four orthopedic rooms, one suture room, one ENT room, three beds for patients with psychiatric illnesses, an 11-bed Fast Track clinic for less severe emergencies and 12 additional treatment rooms. Nurses in the AED triage over 65,000 patients a year to different areas of the department.
AirCare offers an appealing option for nurses who are seeking an exciting and active environment. The AirCare helicopter provides aeromedical critical care transport for critically ill and injured patients throughout the state of Mississippi, transferring them to UMHC or regional burn centers. The AirCare flight team operates under protocols delivering UMHC resources to the referring agencies. Since 1996, the AirCare team has safely transported over 8,500 patients over 1,000,000 miles.
