Department Spotlight: Emergency Department

ED Nurses hit the streets and take to the air . . .

The Emergency Department has started an enhanced orientation program for its new nurses.

ED Nurse Lindsey Wilson, RN, BSN, participates in the UMC Aircare ride-along program. Also pictured is Lead Flight Medic Todd Perry, RN, NREMT-P.

In cooperation with American Medical Response, ED nurses are now working shifts with the EMTs and paramedics in the field. This gives our new nurses an experience more valuable than any classroom could offer. The ride-along program allows an ED nurse to see what goes into prehospital care and what healthcare is like without the resources found in the hospital environment.

In addition to our nurse ride-along program with AMR, the ED has developed another ride-along program for our more experienced nurses – this time with UMC’s AirCare. This gives our staff the opportunity to work with the highly trained Flight Nurses and Flight Paramedics as they treat and fly the critically ill patient from outlying hospitals back to UMC. We are excited to offer this to our staff as a way for them to appreciate the difficult jobs done by the AirCare staff and the challenges of critical-care flight transport.

ED welcomes new staff

The ED would like to welcome several new staff members to our team.

Our new grads are Gina Morgan, RN, Chasaty Sherman, RN, Latasha Spencer, RN, and Chris Sumrall, RN.

We have four new ER Techs. They are Latrella Bester, Heather Hodges, Fran Hudson, and Sabrina Thigpen.

We also have two new Instrument and Supply Techs Aleshia Adams and Terrance Hartwell.

The ED is also welcoming two new Unit Secretaries Wandra Holmes and Mary Lipsey. We would also like to welcome back Ms. Wilma Chaffee to her part-time role after her retirement at the end of last year.

In addition to our new staff, the ED welcomes the addition of an entire new unit to the ED team – the staff of the Psychiatric Emergency Services. The staff members include Beth Ball, RN, Celeste Gordon, RN, Chrissi Gray, Psych Tech, La’keisha Jones, Psych Tech, Donna Katzenmyer, RN, Verena Spivey, RN, and Evelyn Stapleton, Psych Tech.

The ED team is also being joined by Tammy Kennedy, RN, a Case Manager with Utilization Management – we are looking forward to working with Tammy on several new projects in the ED. Please join us in welcoming all these great employees to the ED Team and the UMC family!

April showers, bring . . .

With warm spring weather now here to stay, the ED nursing staff is getting ready to see the return of a special type of injury – snake bites. The nursing staff has had refresher in-services on the various types of snake envenomations we typically see here in Mississippi and the treatment options used in the ED for these patients, including the indications and administrations of IV Anti-Venom. This training allows the nursing staff to augment the highly trained Medical Toxicologist in the ED to provide first-class care for these critically ill patients.
