Unit News

Rapid Admissions Unit/ 2 West

This unit opened on June 4 with four beds and have currently increased to 10 beds.  Our services will also expand to Monday through Friday, with hours of operation of 9am- 9pm beginning August 6, 2007.

We are staffed with one PCT, one US, one IST, and six great RNs, most of whom came from different areas within this facility.  We are very excited to have this unit and we are looking forward to continuing to provide the best care and service to our patients and our neighboring staff and colleagues.

Antimicrobial - PICC

Antimicrobial- PICC service continues to grow with the opportunity to be a specialty area where the RNs are certified and trained to place PICC (peripherally inserted central catheters) lines with the use of ultrasound guidance at the patient's bedside.

We are also excited to now have our fourth PICC nurse who began with us on July 16, Angela Noble, who transferred to our team from the Pediatric's Department.  Angela joins the PICC team along with Shenetta Goldman, Petrina Smith, and Carolyn Thomas

We would like to encourage all staff to continue to utilize the Vascular Access Department (PICC) so that we can continue to provide a valuable and dedicated service to our patients and our fellow staff/co-workers.  Always remember: Early assessment is the key to manage patients who needs a safe and effective line to be placed.

New Faces and Exciting Times on 2-South

Several months ago, there was a patient on 2-South who had an impressive group of family support present at all times.  Over the course of his hospitalization, it was discovered that his sister was a nursing student.   During his stay, this student expressed an interest in working on 2-South because of the friendly staff and good nursing care given to her brother.  Our staff, led by one of the charge nurses, Sue Harvey, did a great job of answering her questions and recruiting.  When she graduated in May, Jamila Spinks relocated from Meridian and we welcomed her as one of our Nurse Grads on 2-South.

2-South congratulates all of our Nurse Interns: Nichole Anderson, Jamila Spinks, and Talia Patterson.  They all have successfully completed their board exams and are beginning to function as new Registered Nurses.

And a BIG welcome to:  Nichole, Jamila, and Talia as well as Krista Roberts, RN; Earl Lee, LPN I; Stacy Feathers, RN; Nicole Jones, NA; and Yvonne Frost, NA; who have all recently joined our team as a new UMC employees working with us on 2-South.

Wow… by the time this is published, the 2-South staff will likely be caring for renal transplant number 60 since Dr. Hawxby arrived in March!  We all have grown in knowledge and skill with this exciting patient population and look forward to honing those skills and becoming more proficient in the specialty.  Thanks to each member of the 2-South team for your hard work and dedication to quality patient care.

 5C

Hats off to the entire 5C, Pediatric Surgery Team!  Since January 2007, the overall quality of nursing care has increased by 20 points.  In January 2007, quality of nursing care was at an all-time low.  Now, 5C is above unit average and trailing closely behind the QDM Norm; (Shy by 5 points!)   I am honored to work with such a great group of people.

Thank you for all your hard work.  It really shows.  Shine!  Show them who you really are!  Way to go 5C!”
